GIDEON RUBINOn Cardboard4 March – 8 May 2021 In the Project Room we present a work by Gideon Rubin composed by 25 small paintings made on scraps of cardboard: a twist the artist employs next to his works on canvas, creating tiny portraits, whose subjects range from historical masterpieces to more current celebrities. Rubin has a surprising ability to distill an image to its essence. Even with the features invisible and the contextual details omitted, we are often struck by the recognizability of the models, by how an attitude, a hairstyle or a garment offer enough clues to reveal an identity. In Rubin’s work the history of art and that of popular culture intertwine so smoothly as to defy any sense of ranking. Images from the 17th century and the present era are rendered in the same visual language and the same delicate brushstrokes, creating a sense of universality and timelessness. Alongside the youths and divinities of Caravaggio or the nobles of Velasquez, he depicts today’s personalities, captured on magazine covers or across the Internet. We can thus observe the renowned Amor vincit omnia in between Beyoncé and Sean Connery, Bacchus and the Lute Player together with Amanda Gorman, photographed as she reads her now famous poem during the inauguration ceremony of Joe Biden. The contrast between the roughness of the surface and the elegance of the brushwork creates a push-pull tension between the present and the past, the disposable and the lasting, high art and commerce, the casual sketch and the painstakingly precise depiction. Gideon Rubin was born in Tel Aviv in 1973; he is the grandson of the Israeli painter Reuven Rubin, a Romanian who moved to Israel to escape from the Holocaust. Gideon studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and then at the Slade School of Fine Arts in London, where he completed his education in 2002 and presently resides. His work has been shown in many solo shows around the world, and is included in private collections in London, Hong Kong, New York, Paris and elsewhere.

GIDEON RUBINOn Cardboard4 marzo – 8 maggio 2021 Nella Project Room presentiamo un’opera di Gideon Rubin composta da 25 piccoli dipinti realizzati su frammenti di cartone: una tecnica che l’artista utilizza parallelamente ai suoi lavori su tela, creando minuscoli ritratti che spaziano dai protagonisti di celebri opere del passato a personaggi dell’attualità più recente. La capacità dell’artista di distillare un’immagine alla sua essenza è sorprendente. Nonostante i volti ritratti vengano privati dei loro lineamenti e di ogni dettaglio contestuale, rimaniamo comunque colpiti dalla riconoscibilità dei modelli, di come un atteggiamento, un’acconciatura o un indumento offrano abbastanza indizi per rivelarne l’identità. Nel lavoro di Rubin la storia dell’arte e la cultura popolare si intrecciano così fluidamente da non far trapelare nessun senso gerarchico. Immagini del diciassettesimo e del ventunesimo secolo sono restituite secondo lo stesso linguaggio visivo e con le medesime eleganti pennellate, creando una sensazione di universalità e di sospensione del tempo. Accanto a fanciulli e divinità del Caravaggio o nobili di Velasquez, ritrae personaggi di oggi, immortalati sulle pagine dei giornali o sul web. Ritroviamo così il celebre Amor vincit omnia farsi spazio tra Beyoncé e Sean Connery, Bacco e il Suonatore di liuto assieme ad Amanda Gorman, fotografata mentre legge la sua nota poesia durante la cerimonia di insediamento di Joe Biden alla presidenza americana. Il contrasto tra la superficie grezza e la delicatezza della pennellata crea una tensione tra presente e passato, il monouso e il duraturo, l’arte elevata e il mondo commerciale, lo schizzo casuale e il dipinto eseguito minuziosamente. Gideon Rubin è nato a Tel Aviv nel 1973; nipote del pittore israeliano Reuven Rubin, rumeno rifugiatosi in Israele per sfuggire all’Olocausto. L’artista ha studiato alla School of Visual Arts di New York e poi alla Slade School of Fine Arts di Londra, dove ha completato i suoi studi nel 2002 e dove attualmente risiede. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato in numerose mostre personali in tutto il mondo e le sue opere sono incluse in collezioni private a Londra, Hong Kong, New York, Parigi e oltre.
