ON PAPER25 July - 29 August 2009 Galleria Monica De Cardenas in Zuoz is pleased to announce the exhibition On Paper, featuring recent works on paper by gallery artists. We will show the new portfolio Ombre (Shadows) and a new anamorphic sculpture by Markus Raetz; two new portrait wood-cuts by Franz Gertsch, as well as recent drawings and studies by Alex Katz and Stephan Balkenhol. Some of the younger artists use paper in the form of collage. Los Angeles based artists Francesca Gabbiani cuts and glues colored sheets to create images of fires and uncanny cinematic interiors, while British artist Chantal Joffe creates expressive figures of women and young girls. The Swiss duo Lutz & Guggisberg paint on newspaper photographs that flood our lives every morning transforming them with an anarchic, wry spirit; Italian artist Maria Teresa Gavazzi uses this technique the other way round: pieces of newspaper are cut and glued to become part of her ironic characters drawn on paper. Claudia Losi embroiders her images on the pages of books, intertwining past and present, scientific illustration and art. The Italian painter Gianluca Di Pasquale often paints in oil on paper and the white space becomes part of the light, transparent compositions. The young Tunisian painter based in New York Nadia Ayari uses watercolors to create delicate yet powerful images reminiscent of the violence that threatens everyday life in Middle Eastern countries. The brushstrokes of Anne Chu, American of Chinese origin, form shapes, drawings and clusters of luminous color to evoke memories of the great cultures of the past. The Dutch artist Juul Kraijer has chosen charcoal drawing as her main expressive medium. With a light, transparent, but definite line she creates the mutating figure of a young woman being transformed or interacting with other creatures or natural elements. The images do not depict real situations, they are metaphors, emblems, representations of states of mind. The young American painter Elizabeth Neel works on canvas and on paper, making painting itself her main theme: luxuriant brushstrokes of vivid color combined with dark zones, where sudden apparitions of images enter and recede from the depths.

ON PAPER25 Luglio - 29 Agosto 2009 La galleria Monica De Cardenas di Zuoz è felice di annunciare la mostra On Paper, che presenterà recenti opere su carta di artisti rappresentati dalla galleria. Alcuni di loro utilizzano da sempre intensamente sia il disegno che l'incisione e recentemente hanno creato nuove opere con questi mezzi "primari" dell'arte, da sempre vicini al pensiero, alla prima idea e all'ispirazione. Di Markus Raetz in mostra vedremo la cartella grafica Ombre e una nuova scultura anamorfica; di Franz Gertsch due nuove xilografie realizzate con innumerevoli forellini incisi in una tavola di legno e trasferiti su carta con pigmenti naturali; di Alex Katz e Stephan Balkenhol studi preparatori per dipinti e sculture realizzati in carboncino o matita su carta. Alcuni giovani artisti utilizzano la carta soprattutto come collage: cosí Francesca Gabbiani, che realizza con carte colorate e ritagliate le sue immagini di incendi e interni misteriosi, e Chantal Joffe, che con il collage compone sorprendenti ed espressive figure di donne e ragazzine. Lutz e Guggisberg dipingono sulle foto dei giornali che ogni giorno inondano la nostra vita, trasformandole con spirito anarchico e sornione; Maria Teresa Gavazzi utilizza questa tecnica all'inverso: i giornali vengono ritagliati ed incollati diventando parte dei suoi ironici personaggi disegnati su carta. Claudia Losi ricama disegni su pagine di libri, intrecciando il passato col presente, il gesto femminile e la raffigurazione scientifica con l'arte. Gianluca Di Pasquale dipinge ad olio su carta e lo spazio bianco diviene parte integrante della composizione leggera e trasparente.La giovane pittrice tunisina residente a New York Nadia Ayari utilizza l'acquarello e con delicata precisione fa apparire sulla carta immagini simboliche e sintetiche della violenza che minaccia vita quotidiana nei paesi medio orientali. Le pennellate trasparenti di Anne Chu, scultrice americana di origine cinese, si raggruppano in macchie di colore luminoso per evocare ricordi delle grandi culture del passato.??L'artista olandese Juul Kraijer ha fatto del disegno a carboncino il suo mezzo espressivo d'elezione. Una linea leggera, trasparente, ma precisa, traccia di volta in volta il corpo o il viso di una giovane donna, che si fonde con elementi naturali fino a farne parte quasi completamente, con esiti talvolta inquietanti. Le immagini non ritraggono situazioni reali, ma sono metafore, emblemi, raffigurazioni di stati d'animo. La giovane pittrice americana Elizabeth Neel dipinge su carta e tematizza la pittura stessa: pennellate lussureggianti di colore vivido combinato con zone oscure, eppure un'improvvisa apparizione di immagini entra ed esce dalla profondità.
