LUPO BORGONOVOAlexandra14 March - 12 May 2018 We are pleased to announce Alexandra, the first solo show by Lupo Borgonovo at the gallery in Milan. The exhibition features works on paper and sculptures of great visual impact. The title Alexandra, from the name of the world’s biggest butterfly, sums up the factors that cross all the works on view in different ways: symmetry, color, geometry as the matrix of decoration, the repetition intrinsic to rhythm, the impulse to collect and camouflage. Through the research conducted in recent years, Borgonovo has developed a body of work that combines the visual language traditionally associated with an exotic imaginary with an interest in the processes of the transformation of matter. Every work is thus one facet of a narrative that blends ancestral myths and contemporary stories in a unique cosmogony.The artist has constructed Alexandra as a set of evocative aesthetic concatenations, organizing the rooms in an intense rhythm of historical ramifications. Time is not perceived only as a membrane that surrounds things, but also as a material that can be used in the creation of work. Two generating forces seem to emerge in Borgonovo’s practice: space and time, welded together. Designing space means designing time.The first room presents two large works from the Agua series, made on rice paper during time spent by the artist in China. The drawings reference the imagery of antique oriental prints, representations of garments and butterflies. The procedure for their production involves delicate immersion in water, during which multiple, evanescent images spontaneously take form.In the adjacent room an explosion of colors surrounds the space; like many butterflies or antique sacred vestments, the “cloaks“ with the title Alix are also made on paper, and stand out on all the walls.The oil pastels entitled Chevalon, made by applying and removing various layers of color, depict an ivory saddle from the German tradition of the 1700s, seen from various vantage points. On the floor the large bronze sculpture Konko shows a negative view of a tortoise shell, bringing out its particular geometric design.The last room contains the Ibu sculptures, bronze castings made from the mold of a palm branch, in which the sculptural process takes on the tones of ceremony or ritual. Intervening on the material, the artist gives rise to works that amplify their formal ambiguity, making them resemble archaic utensils, collectible daggers, or the tails of animals. These latter works seem to have conserved a closer link to the artist’s previous practice, closer to the study of the natural and animal world. Lupo Borgonovo was born in Milan in 1985, where he lives and works. Selected recent group shows: Villa Medici, Rome (2016-17), Moscow International Biennale for Young Art (2017) and Fondante at Museo della Frutta, Turin; in 2015 he took part in Ennesima at the Milan Triennale, Hospice des Milles-Cuisses, CAN, Neuchâtel, Together Forever, 138 Eldrige St., New York. In 2014 he showed at Habitat, Minerva, Sydney; Italian Summer, Galleria Monica De Cardenas, Zuoz; Cocu ou Marron, CAN, Neuchâtel.

LUPO BORGONOVOAlexandra14 Marzo - 12 Maggio 2018 La Galleria Monica De Cardenas è lieta di annunciare Alexandra, la prima mostra personale di Lupo Borgonovo presso la sede di Milano. La mostra presenta lavori su carta e sculture dal forte impatto visivo.Il titolo Alexandra, che deriva dal nome del più grande esemplare di farfalla al mondo vuole essere, per l’artista, l’incontro di elementi che in modi diversi attraversano tutte le opere in mostra: la simmetria, il colore, la geometria come matrice della decorazione, la ripetizione alla base del ritmo, l’impulso del collezionare e il mimetismo. Attraverso una ricerca intrapresa negli ultimi anni, Borgonovo ha sviluppato un corpus di opere che unisce il linguaggio visivo tradizionalmente inteso con un immaginario esotico e un interesse per i processi di trasformazione della materia. Ogni opera è così un tassello di una narrazione, che ricongiunge in un’unica cosmogonia, miti ancestrali e narrazioni contemporanee.L’artista costruisce la mostra Alexandra come un insieme di concatenazioni evocative ed estetiche, articolando le stanze con un intenso ritmo di ramificazioni storiche. Il tempo non è percepito solamente come una membrana che circonda le cose, ma come un materiale che può essere utilizzato nella creazione di un’opera. Nella ricerca di Borgonovo spazio e tempo emergono come forze generatrici.Nella prima sala sono esposte due grandi opere della serie Agua, realizzate su carta di riso, durante un soggiorno dell’artista in Cina. I disegni hanno iconograficamente rimandi alle antiche stampe orientali, rappresentazioni di abiti e di farfalle. Il procedimento con cui sono realizzati è una delicata immersione dei lavori in acqua, per poi attendere le molteplici ed evanescenti immagini prendere forma.Nella sala adiacente, un’esplosione di colori circonda lo spazio; come tante farfalle a muro o antichi paramenti sacri, i “mantelli “ dal titolo Alix anch’essi realizzati su carta, si stagliano su tutte le pareti.I pastelli a olio Chevalon, ottenuti con la stesura e la sottrazione di diversi strati di colore, hanno come unico tema la raffigurazione da diversi punti di vista di una sella in avorio della tradizione tedesca del 1700. A terra la grande scultura in bronzo Konko, il guscio della tartaruga è mostrato al negativo per evidenziare il disegno e la geometria presente sul carapace.Nella sala conclusiva s’incontrano le sculture Ibu, fusioni in bronzo ottenute dal calco di un ramo di palma da cocco, nelle quali il processo plastico assume i toni della cerimonia e del rituale. Nell’intervenire sulla materia, l’artista dà origine a lavori che amplificano la loro ambiguità formale, facendoli somigliare a utensili arcaici, pugnali da collezione, code animali. Queste ultime opere sembrano aver mantenuto un legame più stretto con la precedente produzione dell’artista, più vicina allo studio del mondo naturale e animale. Lupo Borgonovo è nato a Milano nel 1985, dove vive e lavora. Tra le collettive recenti ricordiamo: Villa Medici, Roma (2017 – 2016) Biennal of Young Art Moscow (2017) e Fondante presso Museo della Frutta, Torino; nel 2015 partecipa ad Ennesima presso La Triennale di Milano e a L'Hospices des Milles-Cuisses, CAN, Neuchâtel, Together Forever, 138 Eldrige St. a New York.
