LINDA FREGNi NAGLERPour commander à l'air10 April - 23 May 2015 We are pleased to announce the second solo show by the artist Linda Fregni Nagler at Galleria Monica De Cardenas.The works of Linda Fregni Nagler represent a personal attempt to think about the iconographic conventions that constitute the narrative, cultural and perceptive models of photography. For this exhibition she presents part of the cycle of works entitled Pour commander à l’air, photographs shown in 2014 in Rome in the exhibition of the finalists of the Premio MAXXI.The photographs come from the vast repertoire of imagery of 20th-century journalism. The originals, collected over the years by the artist, have been rephotographed and enlarged in the darkroom. The subjects are figures about to jump or suspended in precarious balance.The choice of this theme is a way of approaching the ambiguous nature of documentary photography. The images show a moment of suspension, but tell us nothing about the fate of the photographed subject. The protagonists, trapped in the 1/30th of a second of a shot, remain poetically dangling between sky and earth.Through the blow-up procedure deployed by the artist it becomes possible to see many manual interventions to retouch the surface of the original prints, done by editors to improve contrast and to make the images more legible once printed. These "editorial corrections” become constituent parts of the works in the show, transforming into painterly marks. These works are joined by new photographs of three sculptures, made by Linda Fregni Nagler starting with images of models of machines to control the flight of an aerostat, built for Nadar by Gustave de Ponton d'Amécourt. The mysterious objects, whose size and original materials are not known, have been destroyed. Only the photographs of them made by Nadar in 1863 remain. Starting with them, Linda Fregni Nagler has first reconstructed the machines, and then photographed them from the same vantage point as the French photographer. This work too is a meditation on one of the limits of photography: the subject, closed inside the four sides of the frame, is visible from a single viewpoint, which conceals as much as it reveals. Linda Fregni Nagler was born in Stockholm in 1976, and lives and works in Milan. She has shown work in solo and group shows, including: Construire une Collection, Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (in progress); last year she showed at the MAXXI Museum in Rome and in the exhibition Stay in Love curated by Chris Sharp at the Lisa Cooley Gallery in New York; in 2013 she was invited by Massimiliano Gioni to take part in the 55th Venice Biennale, in a special section curated by Cindy Sherman; in 2012 she participated in the exhibition Le Silence – Une Fiction at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco; in 2010 in Beyond the Dust, Artists' Documents Today, in SI Sindrome Italiana at the Magasin in Grenoble, and Person in Less at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Guarene d’Alba and Palazzo Ducale in Genoa. In 2013 MACK Books published her monograph entitled The Hidden Mother, based on the work shown at the Biennale. In 2014 she had a residency at the IASPIS (The Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Programme for Visual Artists) in Stockholm; in 2008 she won the residency at the Dena Foundation in Paris, and in 2007 the New York Prize.

LINDA FREGNi NAGLERPour commander à l'air10 aprile - 23 maggio 2015 Siamo felici di annunciare la seconda mostra personale dell’artista Linda Fregni Nagler presso la Galleria Monica De Cardenas.I lavori di Linda Fregni Nagler sono un personale tentativo di riflessione sulle convenzioni iconografiche che costituiscono i modelli narrativi, culturali e percettivi della fotografia. In occasione di questa mostra l’artista presenta una parte del ciclo di opere intitolate Pour commander à l’air, fotografie esposte nel 2014 a Roma nella mostra dei finalisti del Premio MAXXI.Le fotografie provengono dal vasto repertorio iconografico del giornalismo di cronaca novecentesco. Gli originali, raccolti negli anni dall’artista, sono stati ri-fotografati e ingranditi in camera oscura. I soggetti delle immagini sono figure in procinto di saltare o sospese in equilibrio precario.La scelta di questo tema è una riflessione sulla natura ambigua della fotografia documentaria. Le immagini mostrano un momento sospeso, ma non raccontano nulla del destino del soggetto fotografato. I protagonisti, intrappolati nel trentesimo di secondo di uno scatto fotografico, rimangono poeticamente in bilico fra cielo e terra.Attraverso il procedimento di “blow up” messo in atto dall’artista sono emersi i frequenti ritocchi manuali presenti sulla superficie delle stampe originali, applicati dai redattori dei giornali per migliorare i contrasti e rendere più leggibili le immagini una volta stampate. Queste "correzioni editoriali” diventano elementi costitutivi delle opere in mostra, trasformandosi in segni pittorici. A queste si affiancano le nuove fotografie di tre sculture realizzate da Linda Fregni Nagler a partire dalle immagini di modellini di macchine per direzionare il volo dell’areostato, costruiti per Nadar da Gustave de Ponton d'Amécourt. I misteriosi oggetti, di cui si ignorano le dimensioni e i materiali originali, sono ormai distrutti, unica testimonianza superstite sono le fotografie che ne fece Nadar nel 1863. Partendo da queste, Linda Fregni Nagler ha prima ricostruito le macchine e successivamente le ha fotografate utilizzando lo stesso punto di vista del fotografo francese. Anche questo lavoro quindi è una meditazione su un limite della fotografia: il soggetto, conchiuso entro i quattro lati dell’inquadratura, è visibile da un unico punto di vista, che nasconde tanto quanto rivela. Linda Fregni Nagler è nata a Stoccolma nel 1976, vive e lavora a Milano. L’artista ha già esposto in mostre personali e collettive quali: Construire une Collection, Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (attualmente in corso); lo scorso anno ha esposto al Museo MAXXI a Roma e nella mostra Stay in Love curata da Chris Sharp presso Lisa Cooley Gallery di New York; nel 2013 è stata invitata da Massimiliano Gioni alla 55 Biennale di Venezia, in una sezione speciale a cura di Cindy Sherman, nel 2012 ha preso parte alla mostra Le Silence – Une Fiction al Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, nel 2010 ha partecipato a Beyond the Dust, Artists' Documents Today, a SI Sindrome Italiana al Magasin di Grenoble, a Person in Less alla Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Guarene d’Alba e Palazzo Ducale a Genova.
