GEORGINA GRATRIX16 March – 13 May 2023 We are delighted to announce the first solo exhibition by Georgina Gratrix at Monica De Cardenas Gallery in Milan, who is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.One of the most innovative and appreciated artists of the contemporary South African art scene, Gratrix is internationally known for her vibrant use of colour together with her signature impasto technique where layers of oil paint are applied by brush, palette knife or straight from the tube. Charting the expanse of her oeuvre, the exhibition includes portraiture, landscape, and still-life painting. Gratrix departs from these art historical genres by subverting the seriousness of her subject matter, instead choosing to pursue a “state of perpetual incandescence”. Her studies of flowers are theatrically composed, overflowing from their shimmering surfaces with bold lines that create balance and harmony. In her life-size landscape, Friends and Friends of Friends, bustling birds can be spotted in the verdant foliage that teems with life, constantly providing the viewers eye with something new to see. Not restricted to representations of people, Gratrix’s portraits include a rendition of Manet’s famous painting of his beloved dog Bob as well as exotic birds found in the lush forests of her native country. Combining abstract and figurative elements, Gratrix’s studies of people are subjective responses to her characters, exploring the spectacle of mediated images. Georgina Gratrix was born in 1982 in Mexico City and soon relocated to Durban – a city on the east coast of South Africa, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. She has had solo exhibitions in major museums and galleries throughout South Africa as well as in Berlin and Amsterdam. Her works have been acquired by well-known private collections such as the Norval Foundation, the Missoni Collection and the Peres Art Museum, Miami. She recently participated in international group shows (Seoul, Istanbul, Los Angeles).In 2021 in Cape Town, where she lives and works, the Norval Foundation dedicated a survey exhibition to her presenting work from the past decade. Her solo exhibition The Cult of Ugliness at the Irma Stern Museum lasted until 25 February 2023. On display was a broad range of works from Gratrix’s archive, as well as new paintings produced during her residency at the museum and research space. Opened 50 years ago in memory of Irma Stern (1894-1966): an artist much loved by Gratrix and world-renowned avant-garde painter, sculptor, ceramist, as well as a feminist who influenced contemporary South African art.

GEORGINA GRATRIX16 marzo – 13 maggio 2023 Per la prima volta in Italia, dal prossimo 16 marzo, Monica De Cardenas presenta a Milano Georgina Gratrix, artista tra le più innovative e apprezzate della scena artistica sudafricana.New entry della galleria che quest’anno festeggia i 30 anni di attività, Gratrix è conosciuta internazionalmente per le sue opere provocatorie, esuberanti ed ironiche, che realizza con applicazioni di colore, olio soprattutto: flussi energici di strati e strati a pennello, a spatola o direttamente dal tubetto per soggetti - immaginifici ritratti e autoritratti; densi e straripanti still life con fiori, frutta, uccelli e altri piccoli animali; verdeggianti paesaggi naturali - e composizioni visionarie e imprevedibili in cui figurativo e astratto sono affiancati e connessi. Con una selezione di 25 opere, la mostra ripercorre l’intero iter creativo presentando una gamma di lavori nei quali Gratrix si discosta costantemente dalle tradizionali tecniche e classificazioni per sovvertire la convenzionalità e la serietà di soggetti e temi scegliendo di perseguire quello che la pittrice definisce “uno stato di perpetua incandescenza”.Tutti i suoi quadri sui fiori - soggetto molto amato dalla artista - sono composizioni traboccanti e teatrali su superfici scintillanti con decise e audaci pennellate lineari che creano equilibrio e armonia. Con i suoi paesaggi naturali come Friends and Friends of Friends, enorme raffigurazione a grandezza naturale di una foresta tropicale popolata da uccelli dai colori sgargianti, l’artista sembra incalzare lo spettatore alla scoperta di nuovi aspetti e particolari.Nuove, personalissime e visionarie sono anche le interpretazioni che Gratrix propone nei suoi ritratti ispirati non solo da personaggi noti ("Lady D.", ad esempio) ma persino da animali (uccelli, soprattutto) o del cagnolino protagonista di Bob (after Manet), in cui immediato è il riferimento al celebre dipinto del maestro parigino. Georgina Gratrix è nata nel 1982 a Città del Messico e si è presto trasferita a Durban, città sulla costa orientale del Sudafrica, nella provincia di KwaZulu-Natal. Ha esposto in mostre personali nei principali musei e gallerie del Sudafrica, oltre che a Berlino e ad Amsterdam. Le sue opere sono state acquisite da note collezioni private come la Norval Foundation di Cape Town, la Missoni Collection e il Peres Art Museum di Miami. Recentemente ha partecipato a mostre collettive internazionali (Seoul, Istanbul e Los Angeles).A Città del Capo, dove l'artista vive e lavora, la Fondazione Norval nel 2021 le ha dedicato una mostra esponendo i suoi lavori dell'ultimo decennio, mentre il Museo Irma Stern nel 2022-2023 ha presentato una personale che include nuovi dipinti realizzati durante la sua residenza presso il museo stesso inaugurato 50 anni fa in memoria di Irma Stern (1894-1966), artista molto amata da Gratrix: pittrice, scultrice e ceramista d'avanguardia di fama mondiale oltreché femminista che ha influenzato l'arte sudafricana contemporanea.
