CRAIGIE HORSFIELD23 February - 29 March 2008 Monica De Cardenas is pleased to announce the exhibition with new works by Craigie Horsfield at the gallery in Zuoz in Switzerland. We will show a selection of recent photographs from the project "Madrid Conversation": a monumental image of people dancing at the disco "Sala el Sol. Calle Jardines. Madrid, Enero 2007" (400 x 400 cm) and six intense portraits inspired by Spanish paintings from the "Siglo de Oro" and by Velazquez in particular. The project began when Horsfield was invited by Gloria Moure to make new work in Madrid for the exhibition "On History" that she curated at the Fundacion Santander in 2007. Interested in the people and the net of relations that build up the city, he made portraits of individuals, but also of crowds and groups in significant gathering places like Atocha Station at rush hour, discos and Calle Preciados. The enormous size of these images allows us to discern the individual in the crowd, as well as patterns and rhythms. At the same time the size recalls the huge tapestries that Horsfield saw in the collection of the Fundacion Santander. Horsfields' images always relate to History and Art History. In his photographs we find traces and echoes of historic paintings and in a similar way the signs on the skin of the subjects show their personal history. Craigie Horsfields' endeavour is to make photographic images that transcend the passing moment, and to create pictures that contain duration, representing an individual or a crowd, a place or an object in their history, their past and their future in life and in time, not only a fraction of time.Next to the works from "Madrid Conversation" we will show a selection of black and white and colour photographs from the projects "Barcelona: la Ciutat de la Gent", "El Hierro Conversation" and "Irresponsible Drawings". Craigie Horsfield was known for his extraordinary black and white photographs and for the epic film El Hierro Conversation shown at Documenta in 2002. Since 2003 he is making color photographs and printing them with the new technique called "dry print". Dry prints are modified ink-jet prints, in this case printed on drawing paper. The works are the result of a long and complex process, sometimes developed over years. The colour is of great intensity and depth, giving the represented objects an almost disquieting presence. Born in Cambridge, Great Britain, in 1949, Craigie Horsfield studied at St.Martin's School, London, from 1967 to 1971. He was among the first young artists to change over to photography, sensing the potential of representation not only of reality, but also of emotions. In keeping with his Socialist convictions, he lived in Cracow, Poland, from 1972 to 1979. During this period he created photographs that underlined the role of the individual in the history and culture of a place. Horsfield started to print them in large only after his return to London in 1980. In 1987 his work was discovered by J.-F. Chevrier and James Lingwood, who invited him to participate in the exhibition Another Objectivity (Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris and Museo Pecci, Prato, 1989), together with photographer artists Robert Adams, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Thomas Struth, Jeff Wall and others. There followed personal exhibitions at the ICA, London, in 1991, at the Stedelijk, Amsterdam, the Kunsthalle, Zurich in 1992, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Since 1993, Horsfield has sought to blend his artistic perception with social reality, and has executed projects that explore the theme of the relationship between the individual and collectivity. His works are the product of the collaboration and involvement of other people as well as the use of various mediums: not only photography but also film, video, performance and sound installations. Among these projects we recall Barcelona: La Ciutad de la Gent (1993-1995), The Rotterdam Conversation: City and Community (1997-1998), Brussels Summer (2000) and El Hierro Conversation (2001-2002). Horsfield participated in Documenta Kassel both in 1997 and in 2002. A retrospective of Horsfields' work has been shown at the museums Jeu de Paume in Paris and at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon in 2006 and at Moca in Sydney in 2007.

CRAIGIE HORSFIELD23 Febbraio - 29 Marzo 2008 Siamo felici di annunciare la mostra di Craigie Horsfield nella galleria di Zuoz. Mostreremo una selezione di opere recenti dal progetto "Madrid Conversation", tra cui l'enorme fotografia ?Sala el Sol. Calle Jardines. Madrid, Enero 2007" (cm 400 x 400), che ritrae la folla che balla in discoteca, e sei intensi ritratti realizzati nel 2007 che si ispirano alla grande pittura spagnola del "Siglo de Oro" e in particolare a Velazquez. Il progetto è nato quando Horsfield è stato invitato a lavorare a Madrid dalla curatrice Gloria Moure per una mostra alla Fondazione Santander dal titolo "On History". Interessato al tessuto di relazioni tra gli abitanti, alla loro storia e al loro presente, ha fotografato luoghi d'incontro della vita quotidiana di Madrid: la Stazione di Atocha durante l'ora di punta, le discoteche e Calle Preciados. Le dimensioni enormi di queste immagini ci permettono di scoprire l'individuo nella massa, di intravedere relazioni e momenti d' intimità tra la folla, nonché gruppi e ritmi. Al contempo le dimensioni, ma anche i soggetti, ricordano i grandi arazzi che Horsfield ha visto nella collezione della Fondazione Santander. Nelle fotografie di Horsfield troviamo sempre le tracce e gli echi delle grandi opere d'arte del passato; cosí come nei visi delle persone ritratte si trovano le espressioni ed i segni che ci raccontano la loro storia personale. L'intenzione di Horsfield è di creare fotografie che trascendono l'attimo fuggente, che esprimono l'idea del tempo che passa e della Storia nella sua bellezza e tragicità
Accanto alle fotografie di "Madrid Conversation", mostreremo opere selezionate da altri progetti degli ultimi anni: paesaggi e nature morte provenienti da "Barcelona: La Ciutat de la Gent", "El Hierro Conversation" e "Irresponsible Drawings". Craigie Horsfield è conosciuto sopratutto per le straordinarie fotografie in bianco e nero di grandi dimensioni e grande intensità, e per il film "El Hierro Conversation" mostrato a Documenta 11 e all'ultima Whitney Biennal a New York. Dal 2003 ha cominciato ad utilizzare la fotografia a colori, stampando le sue fotografie con la nuova tecnica "dry print". Dry prints sono stampe a getto d'inchiostro modificate, in questo caso realizzate su carta da disegno. Le opere sono il risultato di un processo lungo e complesso elaborato negli anni. Il colore è di grande intensità e profondità e le persone e gli oggetti riprodotti ottengono una presenza quasi inquietante. Nato a Cambridge in Gran Bretagna nel 1949, Craigie Horsfield studia alla St.Martin's School di Londra dal 1967 al 1971. E' tra i primi giovani artisti a passare alla fotografia, intuendone le grandi potenzialità di rappresentazione non solo del reale, ma anche delle emozioni. Seguendo le sue convinzioni socialiste dal 1972 al 1979 vive a Cracovia in Polonia. In questo periodo realizza fotografie che sottolineano il ruolo dell'individuo nella storia e nella cultura di un luogo; il presente viene visto come momento che dura nel tempo, che contiene passato e futuro. Stampa in grande formato solo più tardi, dopo essere rientrato a Londra nel 1980. Nel 1987 il suo lavoro viene scoperto da Jean-Francois Chevrier e James Lingwood, che lo invitano a partecipare alla mostra ormai storica "Un'altra oggettività" (Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Parigi e Museo Pecci, Prato, 1989) insieme agli artisti fotografi Robert Adams, Bernd e Hilla Becher, Thomas Struth, Jeff Wall e altri. Seguono le mostre personali all'ICA di Londra nel 1991, alo Stedelijk di Amsterdam e alla Kunsthalle di Zurigo nel 1992, al Walker Art Center di Minneapolis nel 1993 ed al Carnegie Museum di Pittsburgh nel 1994.
Dal 1993 Horsfield cerca di fondere la sua percezione artistica alla realtà sociale, e realizza progetti che indagano il tema della relazione tra individuo e collettività. I suoi interventi nascono ora dalla collaborazione e dal coinvolgimento di altre persone e attraverso l'uso di mezzi diversificati: non solo la fotografia ma anche film, video, performance e installazioni sonore. Tra questi progetti ricordiamo "Barcelona: La Ciutad de la Gent" (1993-1995), "The Rotterdam Conversation: City and Community" (1997-1998), "Brussels Summer" (2000) e "El Hierro Conversation" (2001-2002). Negli ultimi anni le opere di Horsfield sono state mostrate in una retrospettiva itinerante ai musei Jeu de Paume di Parigi e alla Fondazione Gulbenkian di Lisbona nel 2006, e al Moca di Sydney nel 2007.
