ALEX KATZ, STEPHAN BALKENHOL, JULES DE BALINCOURT19 December 2015 - 26 March 2016 We are delighted to announce an exhibition by three artists of different generations, who have reinvented figurative art, treasuring at the same time the teachings of abstract art. Each of them has developed a unique language using expressive means balancing between representation and abstraction. American artist Alex Katz (*New York 1929) is one of the leading figurative painters of our time. Since the 1960s he has developed a highly innovative realist style unlike any of his contemporaries. His landscapes and figures excel in their simplicity of line, form and colour. His brushwork is light and confident, the compositions subtle and simple, the dimensions majestic. Katz creates powerful images. With his huge canvases, selective palette and two-dimensional surfaces he creates paintings that have both realistic and abstract elements and refuse to allow themselves to be pigeonholed. The work of Alex Katz is widely represented at museum in the USA, including MoMA, the Metropolitan and the Whitney in New York, as well as in European Museums, like Tate Modern in London, the MMK in Frankfurt, the Albertina in Vienna and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Stephan Balkenhol was born in Fritzlar (Hessen) in Germany in 1957 and since more than twenty years has been breathing new life into figurative sculpture with intense and original work. After leaving the Hamburg Academy, where he studied with the German minimalist sculptor Ulrich Rückriem, Balkenhol soon discovered his preference for wood as a material and his interest in wanting “to reinvent the figure”. The human figure, animals, and recently also architecture, are the motifs Balkenhol chooses for his sculptures and reliefs. He gouges them out of a tree trunk, while the traces left by the tools in the wood are left visible. Paint is used in a reduced form to structure the sculptures.Stephan Balkenhol’s works are in the collections of many museums, including the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt and the National Gallery in Berlin Jules de Balincourt was born in Paris in 1972, studied in New York and California and now lives and works in Brooklyn. Escaping any easy categorization, Balincourt's work can be at once figurative and abstract, narrative and dream-like, down-to-earth and mysterious. Commenting on American culture, Balincourt has often depicted the contradictory facets of the United States social, political and economic landscapes. The image is always an encounter and invitation to escape, going from pure utopia to dystopia. On his works the gaze goes from abstract elements to figurative details, experiencing a great sense of energy and intense feelings, but where one painting offers harmony, another may slide into chaos.Balincourt’s works are already in American and European museums, such as: the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada, Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and MaRT in Rovereto.
