Alex Katz7 December 2019 – 20 July 2020 We are delighted to announce a solo exhibition by Alex Katz at the gallery in Zuoz.It will feature portraits from the last ten years, that belong to different cycles, depicting women of character in his essential style and thus transforming them into icons of our time. Amongst these is a recent portrait of Ada, his wife and muse for sixty years, whom he has painted more than two hundred times. In the large canvases that Alex Katz calls Splits, a single subject is painted from different angles and repeated in sequence. The images are cut or “split”, as if taken by a camera. They are inspired by the new possibilities that the smartphone offers to take pictures easily, and thus sum up the paradigms of a contemporary world influenced by photography, cinema and the mass media. Alongside the paintings we will show four preparatory cartoons: large drawings made by the artist to enlarge the images and transfer them onto canvas with the same technique that Raphael and the Renaissance artists used to transfer the outlines of their frescos to the walls. We will also present a number of drawings from the 1960s to the present, made in pencil or charcoal, and individual oil sketches on panel. The entire creative process will thus be visible, from the drawing through an oil study and a cartoon until the final oil painting. Alex Katz was born in New York in 1927 as the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants and studied painting at the Cooper Union School of Art from 1946 to 1949. Since the 1960s he has developed a highly innovative realist style unlike any of his contemporaries. Having appeared on the American artistic scene at the end of the ʻ50s, the years of Abstract Expressionism, and being a contemporary of Pop Art and the subsequent artistic movements, Katz surprisingly managed to reconcile the abstract movement with realism in US post war art, in a style that he himself defines as “totally American”. His final images are essential, luminous, direct and sharp, showing very intense color planes, rendered in a particular bidimensional perspective, free of any sentimental connotation and yet able to communicate a profound emotional involvement. The work of Alex Katz is widely represented at museums in the USA, including MoMA, the Metropolitan and the Whitney in New York, as well as in European museums like Tate Modern in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the MMK in Frankfurt and the Albertina in Vienna. Among his most important solo shows of the last years: Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 2015, Serpentine London in 2016, Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris in 2019 and the upcoming exhibitions at the São Paulo Biennial, the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai and the Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, all in 2020.

Alex Katz7 dicembre 2019 – 20 luglio 2020 Siamo felici di annunciare una mostra personale di Alex Katz nella sede di Zuoz.Presenteremo ritratti femminili degli ultimi dieci anni, il tema per eccellenza e soggetto prediletto del grande pittore americano. I dipinti fanno parte di diversi cicli e raffigurano, col suo tipico stile essenziale, donne di carattere e personalità, trasformandole in icone del nostro tempo. Tra queste immagini spicca un ritratto recente di Ada, sua moglie e musa da sessant’anni, che ha dipinto più di duecento volte. Nelle grandi tele che Katz chiama Split, lo stesso soggetto è dipinto da diversi punti di vista, ripetuti più volte in successione, come se fossero dei fermo immagine. I visi sono tagliati di netto, come nelle inquadrature di una macchina da presa. Ispirati in questo caso dalla nuova possibilità di fare facilmente numerosi scatti con lo smartphone, riassumono i paradigmi di una contemporaneità influenzata dai mass media, dal cinema e dalla fotografia. Accanto ai dipinti, mostreremo alcuni “cartoons”, ovvero cartoni da spolvero: grandi disegni utilizzati dall’artista per ingrandire le immagini e trasferirle sulla tela - la stessa tecnica già usata dai pittori rinascimentali per tracciare i contorni degli affreschi. Presenteremo inoltre alcuni bellissimi disegni preparatori dagli anni Sessanta ad oggi, realizzati a matita e carboncino, e singoli oil sketches, gli “schizzi” eseguiti ad olio su tavola. Sarà così visibile l’intero percorso creativo dell’artista, che dal disegno, attraverso uno studio ad olio e un cartone da spolvero, porta al dipinto finale. Alex Katz, nato a New York nel 1927 da immigrati ebrei russi, è uno dei più importanti ed influenti pittori del nostro tempo. Dal 1946 al 1949 ha studiato pittura alla Cooper Union School of Art. Dal 1960 ha sviluppato uno stile figurativo inconfondibile ed altamente innovativo. Pur essendo apparso nella scena artistica americana alla fine degli anni '50, durante gli anni di dominio dell'Espressionismo Astratto, Katz ha scelto la figurazione ma ha saputo integrare nel suo stile elementi dell'Espressionismo Astratto: le vaste superfici di colore monocromo di Barnett Newman e la gestualità veloce e spontanea di Pollock e De Kooning. Al contempo Katz, ispirandosi ai mass media, ai cartelloni pubblicitari, al cinema ed alla fotografia, ha anticipato ed ispirato il movimento della Pop Art, riuscendo sorprendentemente a conciliare l'astrattismo ed il realismo nell'arte americana del dopoguerra, in uno stile unico e personalissimo. Sono immagini essenziali, luminose, dirette e nitide, dagli intensissimi piani di colore, rese in una particolare prospettiva bidimensionale, e private di ogni connotazione sentimentale, ma che riescono a comunicare una profonda risonanza emozionale. Le sue opere si trovano nelle collezioni dei maggiori musei americani, tra cui il MoMA, il Metropolitan ed il Whitney di New York, e in alcuni musei europei, tra i quali la Tate Gallery di Londra, il Centre Pompidou di Parigi, il Museo di Francoforte e l’Albertina di Vienna. Tra le personali degli ultimi anni spiccano quelle al Guggenheim di Bilbao nel 2015, alla Serpentine a Londra nel 2016, al Musée de l’Orangerie Parigi nel 2019 e l’anno prossimo alla Biennale di San Paolo in Brasile, alla Fosun Foundation a Shanghai e al Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza di Madrid.  Alex Katz7. Dezember 2019 – 20. Juli 2020 Wir freuen uns sehr, eine Ausstellung von Alex Katz ankündigen zu dürfen. Wir werden Frauenporträts aus den letzten zehn Jahren zeigen: das Thema par excellence und erklärtes Lieblingssujet des grossen Malers aus den USA. Die Gemälde gehören zu diversen Zyklen und stellen – im typischen, auf das Wesentliche konzentrierten Stil des Künstlers – Frauen mit Charakter und starker Persönlichkeit dar, die er in zeitgenössische Ikonen verwandelt. Unter diesen Bildern sticht besonders ein neueres Porträt von Ada hervor, der Frau und Muse des Künstlers, die er im Lauf der vergangenen sechzig Jahre über zweihundert mal gemalt hat. Auf den grossflächigen Leinwänden, die Katz mit Split betitelt hat, ist dasselbe Sujet jeweils aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln dargestellt, und zwar in mehrmaliger Wiederholung, als wären es Filmstills. Inspirieren liess er sichvon der neuen Möglichkeit, mit dem Smartphone ohne weiteres zahlreiche Schnappschüsse schiessen zu können. Damit verweisen die Bilder auf die Paradigmen einer von Massenmedien, Film und Fotografie geprägten Gleichzeitigkeit. Neben den Gemälden präsentieren wir auch einige «Cartoons», sogenannte «Pauskartons»: grossformatige Zeichnungen, die der Künstler zur Vergrösserung und Übertragung seiner Entwürfe auf die Leinwand verwendet – dieselbe Technik, die schon Raffael einst bei seinen Fresken zur Übertragung der Umrisse auf die Wand nutzte. Ausserdem zeigen wir einige wunderschöne Skizzen in Bleistift und Kohle von den Sechzigerjahren bis heute sowie einzelne Entwürfe in Ölfarbe, das heisst in Öl auf Leinwand ausgeführte «Skizzen». So wird der gesamte Schöpfungsprozess des Künstlers nachvollziehbar, von der Zeichnung über die Studie in Öl und den Pauskarton bis hin zum fertigen Gemälde. Alex Katz, 1927 als Sohn russisch-jüdischer Emigranten in New York geboren, ist einer der bedeutendsten und einflussreichsten Maler unserer Zeit. Von 1946 bis 1949 studierte er Malerei an der Cooper Union School of Art. Ab 1960 entwickelte er seinen unverwechselbaren, ausgesprochen innovativen figürlichen Stil. Obwohl er die Bühne der amerikanischen Kunstszene Ende der 1950er Jahre betrat, als der Abstrakte Expressionismus gerade das Mass aller Dinge war, entschied sich Katz für die figürliche Malerei, verstand es jedoch, Elemente des Abstrakten Expressionismus in seinen Stil zu integrieren: die ausgedehnten monochromen Farbflächen eines Barnett Newman ebenso wie die rasche spontane Gestik eines Pollock oder De Kooning. Gleichzeitig antipizierte und inspirierte Katz mit seinem wachen Auge für Massenmedien, Werbeplakate, Film und Fotografie die aufkommende Pop Art, wobei es ihm überraschenderweise gelang, die Abstraktion und den Realismus der amerikanischen Nachkriegskunst in einem einzigartigen, sehr persönlichen Stil zu versöhnen. Es entstehen aufs Wesentliche beschränkte, leuchtende, direkte und klare Bilder mit kräftigen Farbflächen und aus einer speziellen zweidimensionalen Perspektive, frei von jeder sentimentalen Konnotation, die es dennoch schaffen, eine tiefe emotionale Resonanz zu erzeugen.
