BARBARA PROBST13 May - 24 July 2009 Monica De Cardenas Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in Italy by artist photographer Barbara Probst. The works of Barbara Probst are always composed by a group of photographs. At first glance they appear mysteriously connected, yet without revealing their secret. Only after closer observation we discover that all the images portray the same situation and were taken in the same second, but from very different angles. For instance: we see a girl with a red scarf unfolding in the wind - from above. Then we see her - in black and white - dimly reflected in a mirror; then turning towards us through a narrow opening between two glass doors. Finally, we see her again with the red scarf waving in front of snowy pine trees. Thus the same moment is divided in different aspects, is expanded, and unfolds in front of our eyes like a narrative. For Probst this fragmentation of the instant into a series of images becomes the tool for exploring the many ambiguities inherent to the photographic image. In her work the relationship of the photographic instant to reality is intensified in two distinct ways, whereby the captured moment acquires an almost unsettling quality: on the one hand, Barbara Probst abandons the single-eye gaze of the camera and divides it into various points of view. On the other, she multiplies and diversifies the short moment of the shot. Thanks to a radio-controlled release system she can simultaneously trigger the shutters of several cameras pointed at the same event or subject from different angles and various distances. The depictions of each specific instant generated by this method constitute a series. From each angle the gaze of the camera gives us a very different view of the same reality, thus revealing all its subjectivity. At the same time Probst uses this method to explore photographic conventions and typologies such as reportage, surveillance, portrait, fashion and the cinematic image, as well as the condition of these images in our memory and consciousness. The exhibition in Milano will feature examples of all these different genres. The contexts are often photographic sets or outdoor locations like Central Park, an airport or the rooftops of skyscrapers. In many pictures one of the cameras can be glimpsed, thus becoming an actor in the scene. Barbara Probst was born in 1964 in Munich, Germany and lives and works in New York and Munich. She has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, most recently at Domaine de Kerguehennec, Bignan, France, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Madison, WI and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. Her work was featured at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in the 2006 "New Photography" exhibition. Upcoming solo exhibitions include Stills Gallery, Edinburgh and a midcareer survey at the Kunstverein Oldenburg, Germany. In 2007, Steidl published an extensive monograph of her work, Barbara Probst: Exposures, which is available from the gallery.
