The Secret Lives of TreesStephan Balkenhol | Jules De Balincourt | Michael Cline | Klodin Erb | Juul Kraijer | Claudia Losi | Roxy Paine | Pavel Pepperstein With a site specific installation by Wangechi Mutu In a quest for recovering menaced nature, in recent years artists have represented, re-created or used trees as complex images and powerful symbols. For the exhibition in Zuoz Wangechi Mutu (*1972 Nairobi, lives in New York) is creating a tree that will grow from one room of the gallery into an other, first covering the ceiling with its branches and then piercing through into the room above. It will be built from simple means such as grey, felt-like blankets made of recycled materials and brown parcel tape, in a similar way to the installations she has realized earlier this year at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin (May 2010) and at the Wiels Museum in Bruxelles (June 2010). It evokes the improvised buildings found in Shanty Towns, at the same time being organic, warm and mysterious. She says: "The tree is the center of many mythologies, many rituals and many a rupture in human expression, both ancient and contemporary, secular and sacred. These"warm trees" are an enactment of an impulse to surround and return to architecture something about these organisms that has always represented our humanity". Roxy Paine's (*1966 New York) large sculptures in stainless steel are essential representations of trees and at the same time embodiments of energy streams. Monumental examples of his "Dendroid" sculptures have been shown on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum and in Central Park in New York in 2009. The exhibition includes drawings and a stainless steel sculpture model. The work of Italian artist Claudia Losi (*1971 Piacenza, lives in Piacenza) revolves around themes of nature, natural history and science. She collects and photographs lichen, that are among the most ancient forms of life and grow only in places were the air is pure. She then embroiders their shapes and colors on canvas, thus mimicking their physical and tactile presence as much as their shapes. They become a kind of synthesis of landscapes and insular maps, microcosms in which the sense of the coexistence of different layers of time becomes physical. Since almost thirty years Stephan Balkenhol's (*1957 Fritzlar/Hessen, lives in Meisenthal) sculptures are made of wood, or we could say: trees. The living material they are made of can be felt in the final work: the skin of the figures has the natural color of cut wood, knots and splits remain visible as much as the artist's gestures on the surface. We will show new works at the gallery and the large outdoor sculpture "Grosse Kopfsälue" near the lake in St. Moritz, in collaboration with SAM, St. Moritz Art Masters. The lush and funky paintings of Jules De Balincourt (*Parigi 1972, lives in Brooklyn) reflect on contemporary ways of life, often portraying people in nature - the myth of recreation and freedom oscillating between tourism and utopia, where the dream can easily become a nightmare. Michael Cline's (*1973 Cape Canaveral, lives in New York) images describe an imperfect and cruel world. He represents contemporary fables of poverty, illness, addiction, sex and violence with a painterly style reminiscent of Georg Grosz or Otto Dix. In his paintings plants and trees are witnesses to human's weaknesses and wickedness. In the paintings of Swiss artist Klodin Erb (*1963 Winterthur, lives in Zürich) the forest is sketchy, dark and mysterious as a memory that combines fear with nostalgia. Russian artist Pavel Pepperstein (*1966 lives in Moscow) evokes and combines different imageries and cultures past and present with subtle irony and wit. For this exhibition he has created a new group of drawings, where trees appear as seen through the styles of different avant garde movements. The Dutch artist Juul Kraijer (*1970 Assen, lives in Rotterdam) has chosen charcoal drawing as her main expressive medium. With a light, transparent, but definite line she creates the mutating figure of a young woman being transformed or interacting with other creatures or natural elements. The images do not depict real situations, they are metaphors, emblems, representations of states of mind.

 Siamo felici di annunciare la mostra The Secret Lives of Trees, che ruota intorno al tema dell'albero e della foresta, mostrandone visioni e interpretazioni diametralmente diverse. Sospinti da riflessioni su natura e cultura, negli ultimi anni alcuni artisti hanno creato potenti immagini o raffigurazioni di alberi dai significati complessi e fortemente simbolici. Recentemente Wangechi Mutu (*1972 a Nairobi, vive a New York) ha creato grandi alberi in feltro per le sue mostre personali alla Deutsche Guggenheim di Berlino (maggio 2010) e al Wiels Museum di Bruxelles (giugno 2010). Per la mostra a Zuoz ha ideato un albero che crescerà da una stanza in un'altra, invadendo il soffitto per poi perforarlo e continuare ad espandersi nell' ambiente superiore. Come nelle sue installazioni precedenti, Mutu utilizza materiali "poveri": coperte di feltro riciclato e nastro adesivo per evocare immagini di costruzioni provvisorie o baraccopoli, creando al contempo una struttura dall'aspetto organico e misterioso. Dice: "L'albero è al centro di molte mitologie, di molti rituali e di molte manifestazioni dell'espressività umana, antica e contemporanea, sacra e secolare. Questi "alberi caldi" mettono in atto l'impulso di restituire all'architettura qualcosa che da sempre rappresenta la nostra umanità".
Le grandi sculture in acciaio di Roxy Paine (*1966 New York) sono rappresentazioni essenziali di alberi ed al contempo di flussi di energia. Esempi monumentali delle sue sculture dal titolo "Dendroids" sono state esposte sul tetto del Metropolitan Museum di New York e a Central Park nel 2009. La mostra di Zuoz include disegni, maquettes e modelli. Da quasi trent' anni Stephan Balkenhol (*1957 Fritzlar/Hessen) infonde nuova vita alla scultura figurativa con opere di grande intensità ed originalità. Le figure vengono scolpite con precisione da un unico tronco d'albero ed illuminate dal colore. La materialità del legno rimane presente e i gesti dello scultore rimangono visibili, accentuando la vitalità della superficie. In galleria a Zuoz mostreremo nuove sculture e in riva al lago di St. Moritz l'opera monumentale "Grosse Kopfsäule" in collaborazione con SAM St. Moritz Art Masters. Il lavoro dell'artista italiana Claudia Losi (*1971 Piacenza) è legato all'esperienza diretta della natura, al rapporto con le scienze naturali e allo scorrere del tempo. La lentezza e la manualità sono componenti importanti del lavoro, che si ricollegano alla storia geologica della terra e vengono consapevolmente contrapposti alla velocità della realtà contemporanea. Per questo motivo il ricamo è uno dei suoi strumenti prediletti. L'artista colleziona e fotografa licheni, che sono una tra le più antiche forme di vita e crescono solo in luoghi dove l'aria è pura. In seguito ne ricama le forme e i colori su tela. Sembrano sintesi di paesaggi, mappe insulari, microcosmi in cui il senso della coesistenza di strati temporali diversi assume, letteralmente, evidenza fisica. Il mondo del pittore Jules de Balincourt (*Parigi 1972, vive a New York) è costituito da immagini potenti e un po' funky, in colori spesso fluorescenti, che ritraggono scenari di vita contemporanea, e talvolta utopie urbane o sociali. Sfuggendo a ogni facile definizione, il suo lavoro puó essere al contempo figurativo e astratto, concreto e misterioso. L'artista crea piccoli mondi in cui scorre una vena critica verso l'ambiente che ci circonda. Spesso rappresenta scene di tempo libero nella natura che oscillano tra il sogno, l'utopia e il turismo, dove il pericolo sembra essere sempre in agguato.
Il mondo di Michael Cline (*1973 Cape Canaveral, vive a New York) è invece assolutamente imperfetto e crudele. Nei suoi dipinti immagina e ri-crea scene di povertà, indigenza, sesso e violenza: delle simboliche fiabe contemporanee, che sa rendere con uno stile pittorico magistrale, reminescente di grandi maestri quali Grosz e Otto Dix. Nei suoi dipinti gli alberi e le piante sono testimoni silenziosi delle debolezze e crudeltà umane. Klodin Erb (*1963 Winterthur, vive a Zurigo) è una delle più importanti pittrici svizzere della sua generazione. I suoi dipinti sono caratterizzati da una pittura veloce e gestuale, aperta, discontinua e immaginativa. Portando le sue immagini fino all'orlo dell'astrazione, l'artista mostra degli aspetti di critica dell'identità che racchiudono la possibilità di rinascita. Questa metafora della metamorfosi è il centro nevralgico della sua pittura. La foresta dipinta da Klodin Erb è oscura e misteriosa come un ricordo in cui si mescolano angoscia e nostalgia. Pavel Pepperstein (*1966 Mosca) è uno degli artisti più importanti della nuova generazione russa. Ama evocare e combinare elementi provenienti da culture diverse con sottile ironia. In mostra presenterà una serie di nuovi acquarelli nei quali gli alberi vengono rappresentati attraverso gli stili di diversi movimenti d'avanguardia del '900. L'artista olandese Juul Kraijer (*1970 Assen, vive a Rotterdam) ha scelto il disegno a carboncino come suo principale mezzo espressivo. Con una linea sottile e trasparente ma nitida, l'artista crea delle figure che sembrano fondersi con elementi della natura.  Mit einer Rauminstallation von Wangechi MutuWir freuen uns, die Ausstellung The Secret Lives of Trees anzukündigen. Sie spürt dem Leben der Bäume nach und zeigt, wie dieses Thema von heutigen Künstlern aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven interpretiert und umgesetzt wird. Bäume wurden in der Kunst immer wieder dargestellt - als kraftvolle Lebensbilder und als komplexe Symbole. Die kenianische Künstlerin Wangechi Mutu (*1972 a Nairobi, lebt in New York) lässt in der Ausstellung in Zuoz einen Baum aus dem unteren Raum der Galerie in den oberen ragen - mit einem Stamm, welcher die Decke durchstösst und im oberen Raum weiter wächst. Die Installation besteht aus einfachen Materialien: graue, filzartige Recycling-Decken und braunes Paket-Klebeband. Ähnlich wie bei ihren Installationen in der Deutschen Guggenheim in Berlin (Mai 2010) und im Wiels Museum in Bruxelles (Juni 2010) erinnert die Riesenpflanze an improvisierte Konstruktionen in Barackensiedlungen und verbreitet gleichzeitig eine organische, warme Atmosphäre. Bäume sind das Hauptthema der Skulpturen und Zeichnungen des Amerikaners Roxy PaineStephan Balkenhol (*1957 Fritzlar/Hessen) arbeitet seit bald dreissig Jahren mit Holz. Seine Figuren und Reliefs schlägt er direkt aus einem Baumstamm, wobei der das lebendige Material als prägenden Faktor in den Gestaltungsprozess einbezieht. Die Hautfarbe der Figuren wird vom hellen Holz bestimmt und auf der roh behauenen Oberfläche bleiben die Bearbeitungsspuren sowie Astlöcher und Splitter sichtbar. In der Galerie in Zuoz zeigen wir neue Skulpturen und am St.Moritzer See, in Zusammenarbeit mit St.Moritz Art Masters, seine fünf Meter hohe Aussenskulptur Grosse Kopfsälue. Die Arbeiten der italienische Künstlerin Claudia Losi (*Paris 1972, lebt in New York) thematisieren immer die Natur und die Erdgeschichte. Sie sammelt und fotografiert Flechten und stickt dann deren Formen, die an Miniaturgeografien erinnern, auf Leinwand. Die Langsamkeit dieser traditionellen weiblichen Arbeit schlägt einen assoziativen Bogen zum Wachstumsprozess und der langen Evolutionsgeschichte dieser Urpflanzen. Die Maler in der Ausstellung machen den Wald zum symbolischen Ort des Unbewussten und die Bäume zu stillen Beobachtern geheimnisvoller Geschehnisse. In den Bildern von Jules De Balincourt (*Paris 1972, lebt in New York) finden sich Natur-Utopie, Freizeit, Tourismus und Zerstörung nahe beieinander. Bei Michael Cline (*1973 Cape Canaveral, lebt in New York) sind Bäume und Pflanzen oft Zeugen menschlicher Schwächen und Grausamkeiten -seine Bilder stellen eine Halbwelt von Prostituierten und Kleinkriminellen dar, die an Grosz oder Otto Dix erinnern. (*1966 New York). Seine riesigen Dendroids, die unter anderem 2009 auf dem Dach des Metropolitan Museums in New Yok gezeigt wurden, sind aus Metall gebaute Bäume, deren Formen und astartigen Strukturen Energieströme visualisieren. Wir werden in Zuoz Zeichnungen und Modelle für grosse Aussenskulpturen zeigen.
Der Wald der Schweizer Malerin Klodin Erb(*1963 Winterthur, lebt in Zürich) ist dunkel und geheimnisvoll wie eine Erinnerung, in der sich Nostalgie mit Furcht vermischen. Der russische Zeichner und Maler Pavel Pepperstein (*1966 Moskau) liebt es, die unterschiedlichsten kulturellen Motive und Erzählungen mit leichtfüssiger Ironie zu verknüpfen. In seiner neuen Zeichnungsserie versetzt er sich in künstlerische Avantgarden des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. So führen uns seine von russischen Märchenfiguren animierten Baumlandschaften auf eine stilistisch wechselvolle Zeitreise.Auch für die holländische Künstlerin Juul Kraijer (*1970 Assen, lebt in Rotterdam) ist die Zeichnung das bevorzugte Ausdrucksmittel. Mit leichten, transparenten und ebenso entschlossenen Linien zeichnet sie Figuren, die mit oft gefährlichen oder unheimlichen Elementen aus der Natur zu verschmelzen scheinen.
