SERGIU TOMATransience28 March - 3 May 2014We are pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in Italy by the young Romanian painter Sergiu Toma.Toma’s paintings are marked by the timeless fervency of their visual description.The apparently “casual” scenes seem interlocked with partially remembered dreams, where the beholder’s viewpoint becomes an integral part of the painting.Toma often depicts interiors where familiar objects carry symbolic meanings and nonhuman forms are used as objects of displacement, to bring up issues that cannot be expressed forthrightly. The rooms are shady and temporary places and the legacy of the traditions is decomposed in this tinkered contemporary set.The starting point for this show is the painting ''The light at the edge of realm'' that was made two years ago. It represents an interior depicted with great attention to detail. The scene is a reminiscence of his childhood and he recreated the scene just like it happened, however the memory is based on reconstruction: when you relive a memory, you fill the gaps with possible scenarios. We are projected to forget details so that we can create general pictures. Because of Toma’s attention to details, the painting became a daily scene more related to present than to the past, and this lead him to the subject of transience.The small painting ''Transience'' it's a resized copy of ''The light at the edge of realm'' and this time everything is hovering on the brink of disappearance. Some of the forms are out of focus, it is like the figures will turn and move, the scene will disperse, the moment will pass.Sergiu Toma was born in 1987 and he lives in Cluj, Romania. The artist has shown works in the recent exhibition “Romanian Scenes” at Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton in Paris in 2013. In 2010 - 2012 he was awarded a residency at the Romanian Academy in Roma.
SERGIU TOMATransience28 marzo - 3 maggio 2014Siamo felici di annunciare la prima mostra personale in Italia del giovane pittore rumeno Sergiu Toma di Cluj.La pittura di Toma è caratterizzata da un’energia senza tempo proveniente dalla grande intensità e precisione dalle immagini che crea. Le scene apparentemente “casuali”, sembrano provenire da ricordi di sogni, nelle quali il punto di vista dello spettatore diventa parte integrante della pittura. L’artista raffigura degli interni in cui oggetti familiari trasmettono significati simbolici difficilmente afferrabili. Le stanze sono luoghi ombrosi e precari dove l’eredità delle tradizioni si decompone creando un set contemporaneo rarefatto.ll punto di partenza di questa mostra è il dipinto “The light at the edge of realm”che è stato realizzato due anni fa e raffigura una scena in una stanza ricreata in modo minuzioso. La scena rappresenta un ricordo della sua infanzia, ma inevitabilmente la memoria è imprecisa e piena di lacune. Data l’ossessione di Toma per i dettagli, la sua pittura diventa una ricostruzione, un racconto quotidiano legato più al presente che al passato. Questo lo ha portato a riflettere ed affrontare il tema della transitorietà.Il piccolo quadro “Transience” è una copia di dimensione più piccola di “The light at the edge of realm”. Questa volta tutto appare sospeso e inafferrabile, alcune forme sono sfuocate; le figure potrebbero girarsi ed andare via, l’attimo passare. La scena sembra disperdersi come una memoria che sta svanendo.Sergiu Toma è nato nel 1987 e vive a Cluj in Romania. Recentemente ha partecipato alla mostra “Romanina Scenes”, che ha avuto luogo alla Fondation Luis Vuitton pour la Création a Parigi nel 2013. Nel 2010 – 2012 ha vinto una residenza nell’Accademia Rumena a Roma.
