Michel Grillet29 July - 2 September 2017 Michel Grillet is known for his watercolors of imaginary mountains. But for over 30 years the Swiss artist has also painted landscapes on tiny gouache tablets. This sentence, with its rather crude pragmatism, sums up the reality of a path involving the encounter with landscape, Zen philosophy and teaching. Michel Grillet’s sensibility can be seen in the particular nature of his works, which are also used as a filter to create contact with young people, his students at the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design of Geneva. The precious miniatures made by Michel Grillet are inscribed in a space where the dimensions are amplified and united. He does not seek refuge by reducing the windows he opens onto the world; the tablets of color that are his starting point, in fact, though very small, open to immensity and permit many comparisons with the screens of our everyday existence.Grillet attempts to capture the vertigo of the fixity of the real, focusing on subjects that repeat without ever being identical. Time reveals its nature as a series of complex fragments. The artist tries to prolong the instant of almost teenage wonder that happens in relation to the Mountain and the depth of the heavens perceptible from high altitudes. Besides his mastery of painting, he calls into play his own identity, the past, as well as the emotions of Memory. Grillet demonstrates, once again, that art bestows new life and form to memories, coming to grips with other realities: thus Col de Chaussy becomes Mount Fuji; the tiny, fragile landscapes rediscover the dimensions of immense posters with shaded and precise hues, which have made us all travelers in pursuit of suspended time, and an image of ourselves.Samuel Gross Michel Grillet was born in 1956 in Geneva, where he lives and teaches at HEAD (Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design).
