THOMAS STRUTH10 May - 27 July 2007 Monica De Cardenas Gallery is very pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Thomas Struth. It will present two new series of Museum Photographs taken at the State Hermitage Museum, St.Petersburg and at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. "My work is about different situations in which people find themselves. About streets as public space, where specific and collectives attitudes affect us everyday, where architecture represents society and culture as the dynamic of a group. About private people in front of the camera and the photographer: how individual characters represent themselves; what could be deduced from them. About families and couples: what their relationship, their roles, their history might be; what the encounter between the artist and those portrayed was like on this very day when the photograph was made."Thomas Struth During the last 18 years, Struth has been exploring the relationship between the viewer and the artwork. In both the Hermitage and the Prado series the crowds are displaying a variety of different ways of looking and seeing, and, this might be a more recent phenomenon, listening. School classes of different ages, bored adolescents and captivated visitors are mingling, talking, gesturing or being absorbed in contemplation. Struth never alters his work digitally. He is capturing a moment, our present time. The scenes can be clearly dated from the contemporary clothes, and the audience of the Museum creates an echo with the viewers of the photographs. As Charlie Wylie has so aptly put it: "His works picture in formal terms (based on a rigorous aesthetic / conceptual precedent) situations of culture found all around the globe today. Struth analyzes the present with an intensely refined sense of what is worth looking at, and what is worth capturing, to plainly state the facts while forcing the eye beyond normal observations." (Schirmer & Mosel 2002) A selection of these photographs is currently installed at the same location where they have been shot, in the Prado Museum, among the permanent collection of old masters. This is the first time ever that the Prado Museum is exhibiting work by a contemporary artist. Thomas Struth was born in 1954 and currently lives and works in Düsseldorf. He has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, at, among others, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Dallas Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Sprengel Museum, Hanover; Carré d'Art, Nîmes; Kunstmuseum Bonn; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and the National Museum of Art, Kyoto.

THOMAS STRUTH10 Maggio - 27 Luglio 2007 Siamo felici di annunciare la mostra personale di Thomas Struth. Presenteremo le nuove opere fotografiche realizzate al museo dell' Hermitage di S.Pietroburgo e al Museo del Prado di Madrid. Le immagini del Prado mostrano la folla che guarda le opere dei grandi pittori spagnoli, quali Las Meninas di Velazques, mentre le fotografie scattate all'Hermitage ritraggono frontalmente da vicino la gente che guarda, vista come dal punto di vista dell'opera; quasi uno studio psicologico dei modi di guardare e di recepire l'arte di persone di diverse età, sesso e provenienza sociale. Thomas Struth è uno dei massimi esponenti della fotografia contemporanea. L'artista tedesco è nato a Geldern presso Colonia nel 1954. Dal 1973 al 1980 è stato allievo prima di Gerhard Richter e poi di Bernd e Hilla Becher all'Accademia di Düsseldorf. Dalla fine degli anni Settanta comincia a ritrarre in bianco e nero il paesaggio urbano, in quanto scenario reale del quotidiano moderno. Con sobrietà e precisione l'occhio fotografico di Struth coglie nell'architettura composita delle città la storia e i valori dei suoi abitanti, mostrandoci uno specchio del subconscio collettivo. Negli anni Novanta Struth estende la sua indagine ad altre tematiche. Lavora per serie o soggetti: paesaggi urbani e paesaggi naturali, interni di musei, facciate di chiese e ritratti. Ciascuno di essi viene accuratamente circoscritto, analizzato e caratterizzato. La serie più celebre é quella delle Museum Photographs (iniziata a partire dal1989): fotografie di grande formato di interni di musei, che ritraggono i visitatori mentre guardano le opere. Avvicinando le persone fotografate alle figure dipinte, Struth crea un dialogo intenso tra i due mezzi di rappresentazione, mettendo cosí in relazione pittura e fotografia all'interno della stessa immagine. Le sale di musei come il Louvre, la National Gallery o gli Uffizi vengono fotografate a colori, in grande formato, affollate di visitatori. L'artista osserva il pubblico che contempla i quadri, ritraendo cosí la condizione esistenziale dell'uomo confrontato con la propria immagine nell'opera d'arte. Già dalla fine degli anni Ottanta le opere di Thomas Struth sono state esposte in importanti spazi pubblici e privati. Tra le mostre più importanti ricordiamo le personali alla Kunsthalle di Berna e al museo di Yamaguchi nel 1987; al Portikus di Francoforte nel 1988; alla Renaissance Society di Chicago nel 1990; all'Hirschhron Museum di Washington nel 1992; alla Kunsthalle di Amburgo nel 1993, all'ICA di Boston e all'ICA di Londra nel 1994; alla Art Gallery of Ontario di Toronto e al Kunstmuseum di Bonn nel 1995; all'International Art Palace di Pechino nel 1997; al Carré d'Art di Nîmes e allo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam nel 1998; al Museum of Modern Art di Tokyo nel 2000; al Museo di Dallas e al Moca di Los Angeles nel 2002, al Metropolitan Museum di New York nel 2003 ed infine al Prado di Madrid nel 2007. Le sue opere si trovano nelle collezioni dei più importanti musei del mondo, quale il Moma ed il Metropolitan di New York, la Tate di Londra, il Museo d'Arte Moderna di Tokio e numerosi altri.
