SILVIA GERTSCH - XERXES ACH8 April - 15 May 2010 We are pleased to announce a joint exhibition by the painters Silvia Gertsch and Xerxes Ach. The paintings of Silvia Gertsch depict instants of reality and are made with the technique of painting behind glass. Those of Xerxes Ach are abstract, painted with egg tempera on canvas and composed of superimposed monochromatic layers. The two artists share a fervent passion for painting and a maniacal perfectionism; their two apparently contradictory languages become complementary, generating a dialogue. For both artists, color conveys energy and must first of all transmit light, the true protagonist of these works. From the monochrome works of Xerxes Ach light spreads out into the space, beyond the borders of the canvas, giving the surrounding environment a specific luminosity. In the paintings of Silvia Gertsch light appears as the main actor inside the image. With its dazzling luminosity it transforms and dematerializes the figures, shifting them from everyday reality into an almost unreal, dreamy dimension that makes them seem to dance, as if liberated from gravity.Silvia Gertsch was born in Bern in 1963, Xerxes Ach in Esslingen a.N, Germany in 1957. Since 2004 the two artists live at Cenate Sotto, near Bergamo. They regularly show their work at the Jamileh Weber Gallery in Zurich, and their pictures have been included in important group shows on painting, like Painting on the Move" at Kunsthalle of Basel in 2002. Their works are in important public and private collections, including Kunsthaus Zürich and Kunstmuseum Bern.
