LUTZ & GUGGISBERG26 March - 9 May 2009 Monica De Cardenas Gallery is pleased to announce the second exhibition of Lutz & Guggisberg in Milano. After having shown an army of semi-burnt birds in the Arab Emirates (Sharjah Biennial 2007), a small pile-dwelling made of branches that cast giant shadows at the Kunsthalle Zürich (2004), a raft covered with liquid gesso and living-room furniture at Kunsthaus Aarau (2008), a glacier-landscape that overflows to the floor below at the Centre Suisse of Paris (2009) and a series of sculptures rounded like "lollipops" at the Folkwang Museum in Essen (2008), the exhibition Lutz & Guggisberg are preparing for Milan may seem comparatively traditional: it will feature paintings and sculptures. A closer look shows that these too are fundamental elements of the expressive universe of the two volcanic Swiss artists. The paintings, made with four hands, are often complex layerings of images that grow for months in the studio, or hatch spontaneously from a stain or a sudden invention, at times with references to the themes of other works. For instance we may find a ship full of objects, reflected in the sky in the form of a cloud moving in the opposite direction; a woodpile topped by the head of a fox; a terrorist amidst the Alps; along with drums, pots, saws and beavers, machinery, helmets and skulls in dizzying, improbable combinations that take on different characters, as juxtapositions and accumulations bring out new, normally hidden aspects, meanings and expressive possibilities of the more or less common objects that crowd our everyday life. The sculptures are of two types: iron castings and "Schlecksteine", that translates in "lick stones". The former include a medieval helmet with a teapot handle attached, and a somewhat deformed motorcycle helmet that seems to stem from an archaeological excavation. The so-called "lick stones", on the other hand, are abstract sculptures with rounded, vaguely organic forms that appear to have been polished by time.Lutz & Guggisberg have developed an oeuvre whose references come from different fields like history, ethnology, geology, fauna, the sciences, science fiction or literature. The protean artistic language of combinations is often the result of randomness. The construction of their works is based on imagery, humor, derision, delirium, and their very free aesthetic research borders, at times, on a laboratory of experimentation, or a cabinet of curiosities. All their works defy definition with just one interpretation, remaining open to many. This ambiguity generates profound uncertainty and puts their work in a position between the comic and the threatening. Their installations exist half way between completion and destruction, between the end of community life and the traces of a dynamic group of survivors. Though their work may seem heterogeneous, the individual pieces are all connected in a network of references that converge in a single vision. In spite of the use of different media, their sensibility is unique and immediately recognizable. The materials are not only transformed into ideas; the ideas themselves are based on and formed by elements encountered along the way in their continuous exploration.
