JUUL KRAIJER21 September - 10 November 2007 We are pleased to announce the exhibition of young Dutch artist Juul Kraijer. Kraijer's works are drawings, mostly made in charcoal on paper. With a light, transparent, but definite line she creates the mutating figure of a young woman being transformed or interacting with other creatures. The images are not portrayals of real situations, but rather embodied frames of mind, literally incarnated by a figure. Juul Kraijer uses the form of the emblem: a combined play of elements that creates a metaphor. The drawings are concise and essential. A hint of environment is missing in almost all of the drawings; the figures are surrounded by blank paper. The bodies drawn are naked but neutral, not flesh but a vehicle. They remain within the domain of the spirit. No voluptuous forms, but half-blown ones, no suggestions of animation or a spontaneous expressive gesticulating, but an intensely concentrated pose that seems to have been adopted for eternity, because it is the most meaningful one. The motionlessness of the pose finds a counterpart in the impassivity of the face. Individuality is not significant with regard to the role they are allocated: the voicing of the inner mind. Every drawing contains a contradiction, between the outer motionless ness and the emotion of the inner mind, making the latter stand out more starkly. Not a static contradiction, but a metamorphosis in action. Somewhere on their silent body a metamorphosis takes place, raises one single wave high above a shallow sea: a bosom becomes a pair of pigeons, vegetation erupts from organs, a body multiplies itself by seven, with plaits entangled. A girl gives birth to a blackbird, hedge sparrows pierce from vertebra, small trees from veins on hands. The outline of the body loses its absolute character. It alters its form to the most meaningful one. The dividing line between things is no longer unrelenting. The indirect frankness of the change of form unmasks the apparent serenity. Juul Kraijer was born in Assen in the Netherlands in 1970 and lives in Rotterdam. In 2001 her drawings were shown at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Her works are in the collections of the Stedelijk, of the Museum Overholland in Amsterdam, of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and at the Kiasma Museum in Helsinki.
