ANDREA SALA26 May - 24 September 2005In the Project Room, we show an installation and works by the young Italian artist Andrea Sala.Sala creates objects and installations that take apart and re-interpret architectural and design projects, purifying them of anything connected with their purpose. The shape that results from this, subjected by the artist to variations in scale and volume, is then remodeled with materials commonly used to execute architectural prototypes, such as wood, pressed pvc, plaster or marble dust. The object obtained from this process of sublimation then suggests new and unexpected possibilities of the dialogue with Space.The project conceived by Sala for the gallery is entitled Mairea and is dedicated to the poetics of Alvar Aalto. The work reinterprets and subtlety transforms the exhibition space and the offices of the gallery. At the same time, it is a reflection on the aesthetics of the Finnish architect, of his passion for the undulating plane, and the possible sources of his inspiration, from the lakes of Finland to the section of a tree. In some of his drawings, Sala develops the profile of the Savoy vase with the same freedom with which, faced by a landscape, he draws with spontaneity a mountain profile.In 2004 Andrea Sala presented a big installation at IX Biennal of Architecture of Venice, in which he covered the ceiling of a space in the Italian pavilion with white irregular and luminous shapes. The starting point in this case was the staging by the Castiglioni brothers of 21 round textile-covered lamps for the X Triennale of 1954. Concentrating on the luminous aspect of this work and transforming regular shapes in to irregular forms, Sala created a sort of luminous landscape different from the original of 50 years ago.In the exhibition "Exit" Curated by Francesco Bonami at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, Sala presented a model of the Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier on a scale of 1:17 transformed into a wooden bookcase made of birch wood. Thus it loses its purpose without losing the quality of the architectural space of the object and re-uses in a concrete manner the concept of the model that was the basis of Le Corbusier's work.Andrea Sala was born in Como in 1976. ANDREA SALA26 Maggio - 24 Settembre 2005Nella Project Room presentiamo il giovane artista italiano Andrea Sala.Sala crea oggetti e installazioni scomponendo e reinterpretando progetti di architettura o design, depurandoli da tutto ció che conduce alla loro funzione. La forma che ne deriva, sottoposta dall'artista ad una variazione di scala e volume, viene in seguito rimodellata con materiali comunemente usati per realizzare prototipi e plastici architettonici, come legno, il pvc pressato, plaster o polvere di marmo. L'oggetto ottenuto da questo processo di sublimazione è pronto a suggerire nuove e inaspettate possibilità di dialogo con lo spazio.Il progetto ideato da Sala per la galleria si intitola Mairea ed è dedicato alla poetica di Alvar Aalto. L'intervento reinterpreta e trasforma sottilmente lo spazio espositivo e gli uffici della galleria ed è al contempo una riflessione sull'estetica dell'architetto finlandese, la sua passione per il piano ondulato e le sue possibili fonti d'ispirazione, dai laghi della Finlandia alla sezione di un albero. In alcuni disegni, Sala sviluppa il profilo del vaso Savoy con la stessa libertà con cui, di fronte ad un paesaggio, si disegna con immediatezza un particolare profilo montuoso.Nel 2004 Andrea Sala ha presentato una grande installazione alla IX Biennale di Architettura di Venezia, in cui ha ricoperto il soffitto di uno spazio del Padiglione Italia di bianche forme organiche irregolari e luminose. Il punto di partenza in questo caso era dato dall'allestimento dei fratelli Castiglioni per la X Triennale del 1954, composto da 21 lampade in tessuto di forma circolare. Concentrandosi sull'aspetto luminoso dell'intervento e trasformando le forme regolari in forme irregolari, Sala ha creato una sorta di paesaggio luminoso diverso dall'originale di cinquant'anni fa.Alla mostra "Exit" curata da Bonami alla Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo di Torino, Sala ha presentato un modello della Villa Savoye di Le Corbusier in scala 1:17 trasformato in libreria in legno di betulla.
