LUTZ & GUGGISBERG17 February - 7 April 2007 New works by the Swiss artists Lutz and Guggisberg will be on view in the new gallery of Monica De Cardenas in Zuoz / St. Moritz from February 17 to April 7.Andres Lutz (*1968) and Anders Guggisberg (*1966) live in Zurich and have worked together for about ten years. Like obsessive scientists or stable maniacs they analyze reality through objects, sculptures, constructions, installations, painting and videos. In 2004 at Kunsthalle Zürich they showed Ich sah die Wahrheit (I saw the Truth), an installation in which they set a little light source inside a rickety architectural construction made of branches, thus projecting gigantic shadows on the walls of the entire exhibition space. "Composed using sticks carefully selected from forests and meadows, the installation I saw the Truth resembles an architectural model and succeeds in uniting the entire range of man's cultural achievement from pile dwellings through to Buckminster Fuller or Zaha Hadid. Lit by a small lamp, it casts wavering shadows on the walls, totally out of proportion with its size, capturing in its reflections the entire history relating both to cinematic and optical visual arts" (Beatrix Ruff). In 2005 for the exhibition When Humor Becomes Painful at the Migros Museum in the same city, they showed the installation Brood: an army composed of 140 charred wooden birds cheerfully marching toward destruction, gradually more burnt as they approach their destination. "Like every work by Lutz & Guggisberg, the reading of Brood cannot be confined to a single interpretation. Its deliberate openness and ambiguity allows for meanders of the subconscious and the irrational, engendering a deep uncertainty as to whether we should find the installation comically touching or threatening" (Felicity Lunn). Alongside the installations Lutz/Guggisberg work on a big series of small images. They cut out photographs from newspapers, let paint drip on them here and there, and then develop them over time with refined drawings, thus triggering new images and stories from the News. They also create sculptures made with branches and roots, pieces of wood, stones and small objects, that remind us of Chinese religious art, or objects useful for a journey through a world of personal precious possessions, cups and trophies, models of buildings or vehicles. In their exhibition in Zuoz they present a large new installation made of charred wooden birds; a selection of their paintings on Press Photographs as well as new sculptures in disparate materials ranging from clay to wood and plastic to bread.This year in June Lutz /Guggisberg will present a solo show at Kunsthalle Freiburg im Breisgau, then travelling to Kunsthaus Aarau in February 2008. 17 Febbraio - 7 Aprile 2007 Come seconda mostra nel nuovo spazio espositivo di Zuoz / St. Moritz la galleria Monica De Cardenas è felice di annunciare la mostra dei giovani artisti svizzeri Lutz e Guggisberg. Andres Lutz (*1968) e Anders Guggisberg (*1966) lavorano insieme da una decina d'anni e vivono a Zurigo. Come scienziati ossessivi o maniaci equilibrati analizzano la realtà mediante oggetti, sculture, costruzioni, installazioni, dipinti e video.Dicono: Vogliamo sempre ricostruire il mondo che è scoppiato...Offriamo alla gente ed al mercato piccole isole di salvataggio selvagge. Dove noi ci perdiamo, dimentichiamo, sogniamo. Siamo assolutamente perduti. Ci ritroviamo. Andiamo avanti! Installiamo paesaggi, tombe, salotti. Talvolta sono invenzioni abbastanza vicine alla realtà, bisogna dirlo...Nel 2004 alla Kunsthalle di Zurigo hanno presentato l'installazione Ich sah die Wahrheit (Ho visto la Verità), in cui alcune lampadine illuminano dall'interno delle piccole palafitte pericolanti costruite interamente di rametti, proiettando ombre gigantesche sulle pareti. Nel 2005 al Migros Museum della stessa città hanno mostrato l'installazione Die Brut (L'Orda): un esercito composto da 140 uccelli realizzati con pezzi di legno bruciato, che marciano allegramente verso la distruzione, sempre più carbonizzati man mano che si avvicinano alla loro destinazione. Accanto alle installazioni Lutz/Guggisberg lavorano ad una grande serie di piccole immagini. Ritagliano fotografie dai giornali quotidiani, vi lasciano cadere macchie di colore qua e là, e poi le elaborano nel tempo con disegni raffinati, facendo scaturire dall'attualità nuove immagini e storie. Creano inoltre sculture fatte con rami e radici, pezzi di legno, rocce o piccoli oggetti, che ricordano l'arte sacrale cinese o manufatti che servono ad un viaggio attraverso un mondo di preziosità personali, coppe e trofei, modelli di edifici o veicoli. In mostra a Zuoz presentano una nuova grande installazione di uccelli di legno semi-carbonizzati; una serie di piccoli quadri elaborati su foto di giornali e raccolti nel nuovo libro "Die Queen im Louvre" ("La Regina al Louvre" è anche il titolo di una delle opere) e alcune sculture realizzate in ceramica e materiali diversi. Nei prossimi mesi Lutz e Guggisberg esporranno in una grande mostra personale alla Kunsthalle di Freiburg im Breisgau (giugno-agosto 2007) che in seguito andrà al Kunsthaus Aarau (febbraio 2008). Inoltre partecipano alle collettive : Il faut cultiver son Jardin, Kunsthaus Langenthal 17.2 - 22.4.2007, la Sharjah Biennal8, Sharjah/ Dubai, 4. - 4.6.2007 e The Photograph as Canvas, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefiled, CT, USA, 2007.
